The timeline of a lecture
Lecturers rarely tell a story in order. They start in the middle, go back twenty years to explain why, jump forward to the consequence and return. A timeline puts the same events back into sequence, so you can see what actually followed what. Alessandria builds one for each lecture, and one for the whole course when you have several.

What it is for, and who needs it
Some exams are, underneath, a question about order. Not «what year was it», but «what came first, and what did it make possible». History, law, literature, the history of medicine, art history: the content is a sequence, and it was delivered to you out of sequence.
Putting it back in order by hand is slow work, and it is exactly the sort of work that eats an afternoon and produces something you could have had in a minute.
What it looks like
- One step per event, with a short line saying what happened and why it mattered in the argument of the lecture.
- Eras, so that thirty steps do not arrive as one undifferentiated ladder: the periods are named and the steps sit inside them.
- The gaps are marked. Where two centuries pass between one step and the next, it says so — because on a drawn line an even spacing quietly suggests an even pace.
It is a proper page: it opens in a browser, it reads on a phone, and it prints. There is nothing to install to look at it.
It works even when there are no dates
Not every sequence is a chronology. A proof, a surgical procedure, the stages of a chemical reaction, the steps of a legal proceeding: these have a strict order and no years at all.
Those get a timeline too, and it is a different kind. The steps are numbered by position rather than dated, and no attempt is made to find years for them — because there are none to find, and searching for them would only produce noise.
The rule: no date is ever invented
This is the promise this page cares most about, and the reason is simple: a wrong year on a timeline looks exactly like a right one. You have no way to catch it, so it must not be there.
- Either the date was in the lecture, said out loud by your lecturer;
- or it comes from a source that was actually about that event, and can be pointed at;
- or the step simply has no date — and stays on the timeline without one.
The third case is the honest one, and it is the one most tools quietly refuse. A step without a date is a small gap you can go and fill. A confidently wrong year is a mistake you will repeat in the exam.
One per lecture, one for the semester
Each lecture gets its own timeline. Separately, a course-wide timeline reads all the lectures together and merges them into a single sequence.
That second one is where a course stops being a list of weeks. Events introduced in week three and week eleven belong side by side in the same decade, and only a tool looking at everything at once can put them there.
From a zig-zagging explanation to a sequence
…now, the printing press changes everything, but to understand why you have to go back — because paper had already arrived in Europe well before, through Spain, and that’s the boring precondition nobody remembers. And then afterwards, within fifty years, you have printed books everywhere, and the Church suddenly has a problem it didn’t have before, which is why the index of prohibited books shows up when it does. But that’s later. Let’s go back to paper for a second…
Timeline — print and the circulation of texts
1. Paper reaches Europe through Spain — the precondition: without a cheap surface, printing changes nothing.
2. The printing press with movable type — the break the lecture is built around.
3. Printed books spread widely within about fifty years — quantity becomes the new fact.
4. Institutional control of what circulates — presented as a consequence of step 3, not of step 2.

Questions about timelines
Where do the dates come from?
Either from the lecture itself, or from a source that was genuinely about that event. Nothing comes from a model’s memory. Where neither exists, the step stays on the timeline without a date rather than getting a plausible-looking one.
What if my subject has no dates?
It still works. A proof, a procedure or a reaction has a strict order and no years: the steps are numbered by position, and no dates are searched for.
Can I get a timeline for a whole course?
Yes. It reads every lecture together and merges them into one sequence, which is how events from week three and week eleven end up side by side where they belong.
Can I print it?
Yes. It is a real page: it reads in the browser, on a phone, and it prints as a document.
Does it work for a lecture that jumps around a lot?
That is the case it exists for. The order events are told in and the order they happened in are two different things, and the timeline is the second one.
